The collaboration between the Cavagna Group® and Semtech has given rise to “smart” metering solutions. Using LoRa® devices, these solutions offer gas markets greater operational and monitoring efficiency.
Ponte San Marco (Brescia, Italy), 25 September 2019 – Due to an innovative data transmission card in its Prodigi LPG ultrasonic smart meter, the CavagnaGroup® is one of the first manufacturers in the world to use the LoRaWAN® protocol to transmit all data on a meter’s functioning, gas usage and consumption. These brand new smart meters will be showcased during the upcoming World LPG Event in Amsterdam (24–27 September 2019).
The integration of Semtech Corporation’s (Nasdaq: SMTC) LoRa devices into Cavagna Group’s new smart metering solutions has been made possible thanks to Mesura Metering ®, the Cavagna subsidiary that is entrusted with developing the Group’s metering division.
Mesura Metering’s LoRa-based smart meters work by embedding LoRa devices to connect the meter to a Cloud platform. Gas and LPG utilities can then view and analyze all meter data by using Cavagna Group’s service platform or any third-party application connected to the embedded layers of Cavagna Group REST services. This has enabled utilities to offer a new service with innovative billing models that are advantageous for end users, while at the same time ensuring that gas usage and gas levels in LPG tanks continue to be monitored.
“To develop our new metering solution, we first identified the key upsides of having LoRa devices embedded in our product. What interested us was its very long range and low power consumption, as well as its ease of use in rapid deployments with very flexible network models,” said Matteo Compagnoni, Head of R&D Digital Devices and IoT at the Cavagna Group. “Our new solution brings improved operational efficiency. It reduces gas leaks, increases safety and solves problems. With Semtech, we have found a leading supplier who was able to meet our requirements.”
“Cavagna Group’s innovative solutions are leveraging LoRaWAN connectivity to offer new services that go beyond metering. This is leading to even further digital transformation in the gas and LPG markets,” said Rémi Demerlé, Marketing Director of Smart Utilities Vertical in Semtech’s Wireless and Sensing Products Group. “These new meters showcase how LoRa is disrupting the smart metering industry with cost-effective meters that provide highly detailed data inexpensively to gas utilities and LPG providers alike. Semtech’s LoRa, with its proven, flexible capabilities, is the ideal platform for IoT solutions.”
Semtech is a founding member of the LoRa Alliance®, the fastest growing IoT alliance for Low Power Wide Area Network applications, and the Cavagna Group is a member as well. LoRaWAN has been deployed in over 100 countries.
