LPG industries are working hard to spread the word about LPG benefits.
On June 7th 2019, the World LPG Association launched the first ‘LPG Day’ with the aim to awake media, politicians and industries to the importance of the use of LPG as alternative fuel.
As the third ‘LPG Day’ is approaching, we want to underline how LPG can be a loyal ally both for people and the environment. Available for different appliances, this practical and eco-friendly fuel offers full engine performances, while preserving the globe and its inhabitants.
The exceptional energy called LPG
The LPG charter of benefits created by the WLPGA clearly shows all the advantages LPG offers, from different points of view. Whichever angle you choose, you’ll always see 3 elements involved: people, the environment and their future. In fact, the purpose of the WLPGA is to show the impact of human choices on the environment, while proposing and promoting a safer, cleaner alternative.
Every part of the charter of benefits is functional to explain why LPG can be identified as an exceptional energy source. It is a clean and versatile fuel and it is also available and accessible in off-grid gas areas. Everyone can use LPG everywhere, to carry out everyday activities. This is what makes it an extraordinary energy source, which ensures increased wellness, both for people and for the planet.
LPG cares about People’s health
A study conducted by the WLPGA reveals that around 3 billion people still cook and heat their homes by burning biomass, kerosene and coal. Moreover, more than 4 million people die prematurely from illness attributable to household air pollution from cooking with solid fuels. That’s even more than from Malaria, HIV and Tuberculosis combined. In fact, by being exposed to indoor smoke, it is 2 to 3 times more likely to develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Furthermore, burning wood and coal, people produce around 150 times more CO2 than LPG per gigajoule of energy, contributing to the outdoor air pollution. In 2014, 92% of the world’s population were living in places where the air quality level guidelines set out by WHO were not met.
Today, thanks to the versatility of LPG and new political programmes, the world population is using much more LPG than before.
This green energy is ideal for many domestic activities (cooking, gardening, jobs around the house) and it is also the most popular alternative fuel. Indeed, more than 25 million Autogas vehicles are in use today. This leads to a reduction of CO2 emissions, as well as a lower NOx and SOx pollution, compared to petrol.
As already mentioned, LPG can raise the quality of life, while guaranteeing benefits for the environment as well. Let’s see how in the next paragraph.
Love the planet, use LPG!
Perhaps, not everyone knows that many LPG benefits are due to its ability to protect natural resources, unlike other fuels. For example, in case of a gas leak, there is no contamination to the sea or groundwater.
Besides lower CO2 emissions, LPG doesn’t produce particulate matter, nor soot, having an immediate effect on climate change.
In addition, switching to LPG reduces deforestation and degradation emergencies. An average household in the developing world uses 2 tons of firewood a year, which means that for every 240 million households that stop using biomass for cooking we can save a forested area as big as Belgium.
LPG benefits: quick recap
In conclusion, compared with petrol and diesel, LPG:
- is MUCH LESS HARMFUL TO THE ENVIRONMENT
- generates almost NO EXHAUST SMELL
- refueling is undertaken with NO RISK OF POLLUTION DUE TO SPILLAGE
- is EASILY STORED and ACCESSIBLE IN OFF-GRID AREAS
- produces MUCH LESS CO2, NOx, SOx and particulates.
The WLPGA Charter of LPG Benefits outlines key areas of focus, in the next article we will look at how LPG helps in managing resources more efficiently, leading to economic growth. Stay tuned!
